As a Senior Underwriter in Liberty Mutual's Healthcare & Life Sciences Practice Group a specialized unit within Major Accounts you will underwrite Workers' Compensation, Commercial Auto, and General Liability (non-products) across all program structures with a primary emphasis on loss-sensitive accounts. You will partner with Loss Control, Industry Consulting, and Claims to deepen your expertise in the healthcare and life sciences sectors while driving profitable growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Book of Business Development: Develop, grow, and maintain a profitable, diversified book of primary casualty business through sound underwriting decisions, strong agent/broker relationships, and effective use of underwriting tools and resources. Mentor less experienced underwriters in technical and professional skills.
  • Risk Selection: evaluates opportunities by qualifying accounts; identifying, selecting and assessing risks; determining the premium, policy terms and conditions; obtaining approvals; creating/presenting the proposal to the agent/broker and successfully negotiating deals.
  • Agent/Broker Relationships: Market to an assigned territory targeting healthcare and life science accounts. Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers through responsive service, site visits, and in-person meetings. Partner across markets deliver holistic account solutions.
  • Portfolio Management: Analyze and manage a complex book of business, identifying opportunities for growth, profit improvement, and diversification. Execute targeted marketing plans and use pricing models to ensure portfolio profitability.
  • Service Value Proposition: Clearly articulate the specialized services Liberty Mutual offers healthcare insureds relative to competitors..
  • Documenting the Deal: Maintain thorough file documentation that reflects sound decision-making through account reviews, sign-offs, and referrals in compliance with state regulations and underwriting guidelines.
  • Leadership: Mentor and coach underwriters on technical and professional skills. Share subject matter expertise and provide regular insights to the broader underwriting team.
  • Continuous Improvement: Actively engage in daily huddles, problem-solving activities, and continuous improvement initiatives to support team performance and operational excellence.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or equivalent typically required. 3 to 7 years of commercial lines underwriting experience preferred, with a proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred.
  • Analytical ability across all phases of the underwriting process with proficiency in qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques. Must demonstrate knowledge of underwriting, pricing, risk selection, and territory management.
  • Strong negotiation, relationship-building, and mentoring skills with the ability to apply underwriting tools and appetite to achieve goals and solve complex problems.
