Overview
**This is a hybrid position and offers the opportunity to work 50% of time remotely and 50% of time in the office.
Responsible for handling litigated, complex medical liability claim files including brain damage and quadriplegia injury. Work directly with defense attorney to evaluate liability and damages. Prepare written reports for claims committee with verbal presentations at quarterly meetings. Evaluate damages and set appropriate reserves. Negotiate settlements and attend trials as appropriate.
Responsibilities
• Perform claim tasks timely and document claim file appropriately. Proactively manage claim activities to ensure fair claim resolution.
• Perform a thorough investigation based upon the type, complexity and severity of the claim. Analyze and evaluate the potential exposure. Formulate and document an action plan based on liability issues and damages.
• Evaluate and document reserves timely.
• Determine and set reserves based on the most probable outcome of the claim. Evaluate and identify claims to be reported to the claims committee. Prepare detailed written and verbal reports within guidelines.
• Work directly with defense attorney through collaboration on strategy and resolution. Adhere to litigation management guidelines. Manage claim expense within guidelines.
• Attend depositions, mediations and trials.
• Stay abreast of current and emerging complex litigation, claim settlement issues, trends, court decisions, and plaintiff bar activities.
• Provide knowledge and guidance to other claim handlers regarding claim strategy, jurisdictional and legal nuances including experts.
• Maintain a professional, courteous, and helpful approach in all communications with internal and external customers and business partners.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree preferred. A combination or equivalent education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Additional legal education or law degree is highly desirable.
• Evidence of continuing education in the insurance industry is required.
• AIC and/or CPCU designation is highly preferred.
• Typically, five or more years in technical insurance claim roles with increasing responsibilities is required.
• Strong listening verbal and written communication skills.
• Advanced negotiation skills
• Advanced knowledge of legal principles.
• Effective planning and organization skills
• Ability to travel to attend depositions, mediations and claims committees
