Merchants Insurance Group is a leading Property and Casualty Insurer in the Northeast and is looking for an experienced Accounting Operations Supervisor for our General Accounting team to join our Corporate Headquarters located in Buffalo, New York. The candidate selected for this position will be trained remotely and must be able to work from home in a designated work area until such time as it is determined that colleagues will return to the office.
The Accounting Operations Supervisor will become part of a dedicated General Accounting management team focusing on month end close, accounts payable function, statutory financial statements, audited combined financial statements, operating budget preparation and the leadership and mentoring of General Accounting direct reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform assigned month-end close responsibilities to include journal entries, preparation of reports and performing analytics.
- Assist with the preparation of annual and quarterly statutory statements and supplements for submission to regulators in accordance with published guidelines.
- Prepare annual audited combined financial statements with detailed work papers for support during the external audit.
- Maintain the Excel-based operating budget planning system and create reports for analysis by Sr. management. Work with cost center managers to answer questions and resolve issues regarding the operating budgets.
- Responsible for all aspects of the accounts payable function.
- Administer the non-employee compensation system, including data collection and furnishing 1099s to payees and transmitting to the IRS.
- Supervise all staff reporting to this position.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Qualified candidates will have a 4 year degree in accounting or finance.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in an accounting environment.
- Solid understanding of Accounting Principles, internal controls, general ledger transactions, and account reconciliations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office to include Excel and Word.
- Prior experience with statutory accounting principles preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience is a plus.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
