Merchants Insurance Group, is a leading Property and Casualty Insurer in the Northeast, and is looking for an experienced Financial Accountant for our General Accounting team to join our Corporate Headquarters located in Buffalo, New York. The candidate selected for this position will be trained remotely and must be able to work from home in a designated work area until such time as it is determined that colleagues will return to the office.
The Financial Accountant will become part of a dedicated General Accounting team focusing on the accounting, analysis, and reporting of activities related to the Company’s reinsurance program; maintenance of various reinsurance systems; general ledger account analysis and reconciliation; preparation of statutory financial schedules and exhibits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform all tasks related to contract treaty administration including premium payment remittance, paid loss and loss adjustment expense recovery, true-up calculation and year end unearned premium adjustment.
- Perform assigned month-end closing responsibilities in accordance with the master closing schedule and underlying task checklists.
- Assist with the preparation of annual and quarterly statutory statements and supplements for submission to regulators in accordance with published guidelines.
- Cross train to learn the entire abandoned property process and system in order to serve as an effective backup.
- Participate on company project teams that impact general accounting on an as-needed basis.
- Document and update, when necessary, the existing information systems within the general accounting department. This includes all reinsurance procedures.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Qualified candidates will have a 4 year degree or equivalent work related experience.
- A minimum of two years’ experience in a general accounting environment.
- Solid understanding of accounting principles, internal controls, general ledger transactions, and account reconciliations.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Proven ability to effectively prioritize workload to meet stringent deadlines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Prior insurance and Microsoft access experience a plus.
