Nature of Job

Manage Personal Lines underwriting operations according to company philosophies and underwriting guidelines in order to maintain profits. Work with actuarial staff regarding annual rate reviews and profitability; communicate with agents, policyholders and other insurance professionals; develop, coordinate, and oversee Personal Lines underwriting processes; supervise assigned direct reports; develop and maintain positive relationships with agents, underwriting staff and internal / external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • College education desired or equivalent insurance education.
  • Minimum of ten years’ experience in Personal Lines underwriting preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to understand and explain insurance coverages offered by the company.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgment based on company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to understand applicable state insurance regulations and laws.
  • Ability to organize and manage priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with company computer systems and processing methods including Word, Excel and other Office Suite components.
  • Ability and willingness to travel in and out of state.
  • Commitment to company values and customer service.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, supervision and mentoring to Personal Lines underwriting staff.
  • Oversee professional development of Personal Lines underwriting staff, including their specific roles, responsibilities and personal goals.
  • Train or supervise training of underwriting staff.
  • Conduct and oversee annual performance reviews.
  • Recommend staff changes to Underwriting VP.
  • Oversee work production to ensure that new policies, renewals, changes and cancellations are processed in an accurate, timely and efficient manner.
  • Oversee the underwriting of new policy applications, renewals and change requests to existing policies to confirm that insured risks continue to meet acceptable company standards and guidelines.
  • Provide oversight to ensure proper risk management and processing by underwriting staff.
  • Achieve and maintain underwriting profitability for each assigned business line.
  • Review underwriting guidelines and implement changes as needed.
  • Identify potential loss areas and work with other departments to develop strategies for improvement.
  • Evaluate emerging risks.
  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Function as Personal Lines subject matter expert and product analyst within Underwriting supporting Product Development and Actuarial Services.
  • Work with Marketing to evaluate agency experience in assigned areas.
  • Communicate with agents, policyholders and internal staff regarding underwriting matters.
  • Assist with agency seminars, training and visits as needed.
  • Inform Underwriting VP of agency and policyholder concerns.
  • Maintain knowledge of current industry practices and developments through continuing education.
  • Assist Underwriting VP with annual budgeting as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Underwriting VP.
