Loss Control Consultant Trainee


Job Description

Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated Insurance Carrier, is seeking a motivated and ambitious individual to join our team as a trainee in the Loss Control Services department. Entry-level training program designed to prepare the associate for a future field assignment as a Loss Control Consultant. The program will assist the associate in developing the skills and expertise related to: understanding and succeeding in the role of a field Loss Control Consultant, report and letter writing, risk evaluation, solution development, addressing exposures, effective listening and risk assessment interviewing. The program also provides the associate with an overview of the organization, introduction to a corporate environment and working with key stakeholders, and an enhanced understanding of insurance and the Property & Casualty Industry. Work is performed under close supervision.

The position requires the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Be willing to relocate into an entry-level field Loss Control Consultant position in one of our operating states upon successful completion of a 6-12 month initial training program in our Lansing, MI corporate office.
  • Participate in on-the-job shadowing with experienced Loss Control associates.
  • Learn Loss Control risk assessment and service visit processes for a variety of industries including Industrial Processing, Construction, Motor Carrier/Transportation, Garage/Body Shop and many others.
  • Complete assigned projects involving the use of various software, Microsoft Office, internal systems and other technology.
  • Deliver collaborative Loss Control services that provide value and solutions to policyholders, working with them to improve their loss exposures and reduce the overall cost of risk.
  • Summarize visit activities including solutions-based discussion recommendations to minimize policyholder exposure to loss.
  • Work with other associates in various departments, as well as our agency partners, to provide effective risk improvement consultations to commercial policyholders that positively influence loss ratios, relationships, new business growth and account retention.
  • Conduct on-site visits of existing and prospective policyholders and complete comprehensive survey reports to evaluate operations, exposures and controls, and provide an overall assessment for adequate risk selection, pricing and application of techniques for profitable Underwriting results.
  • Act as a technical resource for Underwriters, other internal departments, Loss Control team members, agency partners and policyholders.

PREFERRED

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in safety related sciences, engineering, related field or equivalent. These requirements may be waived at Company discretion based upon prior education, experience or work performance.
  • Successful completion of an Occupational Safety & Health internship is preferred. 0-2 years of professional experience is desired.
