Underwriting Assistant (Marine)

MSIG insures large multinational and domestic companies, and offers comprehensive global insurance programs.  Our US subsidiary, Mitsui Sumitomo Marine Management (MSMM), currently has an opportunity available for an Underwriting Assistant (Marine) in our Los Angeles, CA office.

Summary The Underwriting Assistant provides support and assistance to underwriting staff including collecting data, organizing files and reports, performing administrative and customer service duties regarding new and renewal accounts that will assist in ensuring the underwriting process is handled efficiently and accurately.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Underwriting Assistance (40%)                                                 

  • Gather and organize information to prepare new and renewal policy/account files for underwriter review and direction in accordance with department and company underwriting procedures and standards.  This may include, but is not limited to, setting up folders, preparing and completing account summary worksheets, completing underwriting spreadsheets, loss rating, P&L statements, company selection forms, schedule rating worksheets and preparing electronic underwriting documentation package for bound accounts.  This may include significant personal, telephonic or electronic interaction with external producers and/or internal staff.
  • Review new/renewal submissions for necessary underwriting data and follow up with producers for additional information or clarification.
  • Conduct internet searches to secure additional publicly available client information including financial statements or client profiles to assist underwriters in evaluating the risk. 
  • Order Risk Engineering reports as necessary in accordance with department and company procedures.  Follow-up on recommendations to ensure compliance with MSIG risk management standards.
  • Assist underwriters with preparing quotes and binders.

Processing   (40%)        

  • Process bound business and endorsements in company systems including coding, booking data entry, and policy issuance where appropriate in accordance with department and company procedures.  Coordinate with Accounting, Reinsurance and/or Operations departments to ensure business is properly recorded in company financial systems and policies are issued accurately and in a timely manner in accordance with department and company procedures and standards.
  • Maintain various account databases to ensure accurate and up to date information is available to underwriters and managers, including submission logs, UM, RMS, Diaries, etc). 

Customer Service            (20%)

  • Provide timely and professional customer service to internal and external customers including MSIG Underwriters, Accounting, Reinsurance, Marketing or Operations staff, and external Producers to facilitate the efficient processing of business and to ensure excellent customer service to our customers.  Responds to producers service requests for loss runs, endorsements, etc.; ensuring all appropriate documentation is received (i.e. signed statements of values; signed terrorism rejection forms, etc) and properly recorded in our files. Troubleshoot transaction processing issues with MSIG Accounting, Reinsurance, Marketing or Operations departments, and external Producers. Research and resolve inquiries generated from internal and external customers (i.e. policy/account status, rating and billing issues, etc.).
  • Perform other such duties to assist in the efficient operation of the department as may be assigned by manager.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience                                                    

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. College degree is preferred.
  • 0-3 years of experience as underwriting assistant or equivalent role.

Language

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals and instructions from underwriting staff or management.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to written or verbal questions from managers, underwriters, clients, brokers and customers.

Mathematical

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. 

Reasoning

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions.

Computer

Proficient in MS Office Suite.

Other Qualifications Required:

Internal and external continuing insurance education required as directed by manager.

Other Skills and Abilities Required:

Overtime required periodically to meet the needs of the business.
