Position Title: Assistant Controller

General Purpose of the Position:

The Assistant Controller will be responsible for streamlining accounting processes utilizing advanced excel skills, supervising accounting personnel, monitoring individual operating units’ compliance with the accounting policies and procedures and review monthly financial information of the operating units.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages most aspects of the day-to-day accounting operations, including, but not limited to oversight of month end closings, preparation of statutory and GAAP financial statements, account analysis/reconciliation and management reports
  • Utilize and further enhance accounting IT systems to facilitate processes and maintain records
  • Streamline business processes to maximize department productivity
  • Performs analytical procedures to determine any unusual trends, errors or areas of improvement; discuss results with business unit management and corporate personnel as needed.
  • Work with internal and external auditors
  • Communicate with co-workers, management, clients, and others in a courteous and professional manner
  • Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions

    Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Strong knowledge base of GAAP and statutory accounting and reporting requirements for a public company
  • Proven management/supervisory experience
  • Deadline and detail oriented
  • Strong analytical, leadership, organizational and problem resolution skills

    PC Skills:

  • Advanced Excel skills, including using PivotTables and Subtotals beyond the introductory level and create compound and complex formulas (such as array formulas) to achieve much with less
  • SQL programming skills are preferred or an aptitude to develop these skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains is a plus

    Education and Experience Required:

  • BA/BS in Accounting
  • 7-10 years accounting experience, preferably in P&C insurance industry, including at least 5 years at management/supervisor level
  • CPA is a plus
