MSIG insures large multinational and domestic companies, and offers comprehensive global insurance programs.  Our US subsidiary, Mitsui Sumitomo Marine Management (MSMM), currently has an opportunity available for a Sr. Accountant in our Warren, NJ office.

SUMMARY:  Participates in the compilation of GAAP and IFRS financial statements for the holding company and insurance entities.  Key member of the IFRS implementation project. Analyzes results of operations and financial position, loss development trends, and other key indicators.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Implementation of IFRS standards:

  • Collaborate with accounting team and outside consultant to identify accounting, financial statement, and reporting issues based on professional guidelines for U.S. GAAP and IFRS
  • Develop a working knowledge of authoritative IFRS literature, related concepts and terminology;
  • Assist in the development of IFRS models (initial focus on insurance contracts, financial instruments, and lease accounting);
  • Assist in the evaluation of current systems capabilities and research software alternatives 
  • Provide recommendations for business and process improvements based upon knowledge gained relative to the Company’s operations, processes, and business objectives

Financial Reporting:  

  • Participate in compilation of monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidated financial statement reporting and analysis for management and external parties;
  • Review and analyze differences between Statutory and GAAP financial statements with an emphasis on the Company’s accounting processes for loss reserves, reinsurance, investments and accounts receivable
  • Assist with the internal and external financial audits
  • Assist in the creation and design of automated reports requested by management
  • Proactively build relationships with members of the Finance Division and other company employees

Supervisory Responsibilities:                                                   

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:                  

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited university
  • 5-7  years’ related accounting experience
  • Property & Casualty Insurance experience is required.  
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting;  IFRS knowledge is highly desired
  • Excellent written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills with a customer service focus
  • CPA designation helpful

Computer Skills:                                                             

Must have strong computer skills including MS Office Word, Excel, and the ability to learn and implement other software.  Strong knowledge and experience with General Ledger Accounting packages and accounting research software such as CCH or Thompson Reuters.

  • Overtime required as necessary (January – March mandatory including Saturdays in January and February).
