General Summary: 

Direct and supervises the handling of complex Construction Defect claims, both litigated and non-litigated, that have potentially large exposures, complex coverage issues. 

Key Responsibilities: 

1. Analyze coverage, make appropriate coverage determination and accurately convey and explain the company’s coverage position to the insured and others where appropriate
2. Identify all exposures, establish accurate and timely reserves and monitor those reserves as claim matures. 
2. Direct the investigation and settlement of claims, both litigated and non-litigated, which may involve multiple coverage issues.
3. May be called upon to conduct training or participate in auditing claims files.
4. Identify vendors with the appropriate skill sets for the situation and effectively manage the vendors to achieve satisfactory results on both expense and indemnity costs. 
5. Maintains electronic records that accurately and thoroughly document all file handling activity. 
6. May be called upon to perform additional duties as directed.

Minimum Experience / Education:

• 5 or more years handling Construction Defect claims.
• 8 years or more claims handling experience preferred.
• High school degree or equivalent; college degree preferred.
• Insurance designation preferred.
• Basic computer skills and Microsoft applications.

In states where required, obtains and maintains necessary adjuster licensing within six months of hire. 

Communication: Professional oral and written communication skills are critical to the success of this position. All claims service must be handled with tact, diplomacy and courtesy at all times. Must create documents that are technically correct and in compliance with State Auto’s guidelines.

Collaboration: Must be able to collaborate and develop strong team relationships with associates from within and outside the Claims Department. 

Technical Knowledge: Must have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of insurance policies, including personal and commercial auto policies and various commercial general liability policies. Must have the ability to read and understand complex documents such as medical reports, contracts and other legal documents.
