General Summary

Handles first party property claims with varying degrees of complexity as defined by Department processes and procedures. Ability to investigate facts of loss, including physical inspection of property and make coverage determination. Ability to scope and estimate real property, personal property and time element damages.

Key Responsibilities

1. Determines policy status and coverage; reviews appropriate policies for coverage, limits and deductibles; immediately notify supervisor of any claim that may be outside of assigned scope of handling level or authority.
2. Makes prompt contact with policy holders and other parties in the loss involved to schedule inspections as needed. Sets expectations, develops an action plan and performs an initial exposure assessment.
3. Conducts investigation to determine coverage disposition and damages, including recorded statements and field inspections. Reviews any estimates or receipts for consistency with description of loss as well as appropriate scope and pricing. Identifies any subrogation potential and liability exposures and consults with supervisor.
4. Ensures regular and timely follow-up and brings claims to prompt and appropriate conclusion while keeping the customer informed throughout the process.
5. Evaluate and settle structural, contents and time element claims with input from their supervisor as needed.
6. Ability to prepare property estimates using estimating software.
7. Maintains electronic records that accurately and thoroughly document all file handling activity.
8. Ability to climb ladders and roofs. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. May require overnight travel with the possibility to deploy for travel on short notice.
9. Must maintain reasonable and predictable attendance.
10. May be called upon to perform additional duties as directed.

Minimum Experience / Education

• 3 years of property claims experience or related construction experience preferred.
• High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred.
• Insurance designation preferred.
• Basic computer skills and software applications.

In states where required, obtains and maintains necessary adjuster licensing within six months.

Communication: Professional oral and written communication skills are critical to the success of this position. All claims service must be handled with tact, diplomacy and courtesy at all times. Must create documents that are technically correct and in compliance with State Auto’s guidelines.

Collaboration: Must be able to collaborate and develop strong team relationships with associates from within and outside the Claims Department.

Technical Knowledge: Must have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of insurance policies, including first party property coverages. Must have the ability to read and understand complex documents such as contracts, estimates and other legal documents. Estimating application experience preferred.

Physical Ability - Property: Must be willing and able to perform CAT adjustment duties (overnight travel involved) including, handling of ladders, climbing on roofs and other physical demands involving outside property claim handling.
