Job Description

Position Title:                     Risk Control Consultant

Department:                      Risk Management          

Classification:                     Exempt

Reports to:                         Director of Loss Control/Risk Management

Job Statement:                               

The Risk Control Consultant analyzes assigned clients’ risk management and loss control environments and recommends appropriate courses of action to support the clients’ efforts to keep their workplace safe. 

Works closely with Brokers, Claims examiners, Board Members and clients on best solutions that can be seamlessly implemented.  Develops and manages in-house safety management skills to identify problems and suggest cost effective solutions taking into account customer may have limited resources.  Reviews compliance with such agencies as CAL-OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, ASTM, and DOT and provides clients with technical information on standards, codes, and regulations. 

Represents and provides exceptional customer service to enhance client relationships and client retention. Provides on-going frequent guidance to keep clients up to date on services, measure outcomes, and support continuous improvement. 

Job Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

  • Maintain consistent and supportive interaction with Producers, Risk Department Staff, Claims Staff, CSA’s, Account Executives and other internal partners.
  • Works closely with the Captive Groups and stays up to date with all the latest requirement and demands of the members and managements team.
  • Will lead and provide workshops at the request of the Captive Group.
  • Participate in Risk Management Team development, including preparing management reports and team building presentation as requested.
  • Maintain professional standing and appropriate credentials.
  • Establish ongoing communications with internal departments for client strategy issues.
  • Assist in the development and marketing of new products and business opportunities.
  • Review existing safety program and assess client’s compliance and effectiveness.
  • Provide assistance and guidance with writing or augmenting programs that are deficient.
  • Perform on-site inspections (workers’ compensation, property and liability).
  • Schedule, conduct and create work product and follow up with all accounts and prospects as assigned.
  • Respond effectively and appropriately to specific loss concerns raised by clients.
  • Provide claims cost containment strategies and assistance to clients, i.e. risk reduction techniques.  etc.
  • When appropriate, provide loss trend analysis with recommendations and action plan.
  • Create well written internal and external communications.  Reviewing copy for errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling and check material for readability, style, and agreement with InterWest policy and practice.
  • Produce and deliver quality safety training programs as qualified to teach subjects.
  • Comply with all department follow-up guidelines to review actions taken, and results obtained, from recommendations made to clients.
  • Keep clients informed of any changes with safety/compliance regulations.
  • Maintain relevant reporting and documentation of activity as set by the Director.
  • All other duties as requested by the Director of Loss Control.

    Marginal Functions

  • Develop ongoing data collection and reporting strategies of industry best practices and work with the platform administrator in posting that data.
  • As products are developed that are relative to InterWest Insurance Services, LLC. Risk Department all products and programs will be branded appropriately.

Job Qualifications: 

Education:  Bachelor's degree in occupational health, safety, or a related field, such as engineering, or science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience appropriate for the position.

Experience:  At least five years’ experience involving work in and knowledge of the principals, practice, and techniques of risk management.  Experience must include the development of training classes, creation of well written training materials, and demonstration of effective presentation and facilitation skills.  Solid knowledge of state and federal regulations related to risk management as well as interpretation of compliance code.

Special Requirements:  Valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and must be able to comply with InterWest Insurance Services Personal Auto Usage Policy.

Current standing as a Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the National Safety Council, or Occupational Health Safety Technologist (OHST) or Safety Management Specialist (SMS) or other Board of Certified Safety Professional Designations, will be weighted.

Work Environment:

The work environment is approximate 70% field work and 30% administrative work.  The administrative work   is typically in an office environment and the worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.  During field work the worker may be exposed to potential risks associated with a client’s worksite.  Appropriate personal protective equipment required for the environment should always be used, i.e., eye protection, hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, etc.  Driving conditions may be hazardous, particularly in rural areas and seasonal conditions.  Occasionally, overnight stays are required to effectively provide service to clients.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly to frequently stand; sit; drive; walk-normal surfaces; use hands to finger, to keyboard, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; talk and hear. The worker will walk with clients around worksites, warehouses and construction projects on uneven surfaces for extended periods of time.  Stand for up to four hours at a time while providing training and classes. Sit at a computer workstation for two hours at a time, taking mini-breaks every 50 minutes.

The employee is occasionally required, bend, twist, turn, reach with hands and arms, and may lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision for example to view the computer, reading and analyzing data.  Distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for frequent driving (up to 4-6 hours per day, at least three days a week).
