The Fraud Data Scientist is responsible for monitoring and understanding customer behavior, detecting unusual activity, and preventing fraudulent payments and losses while mitigating the impact on legitimate customers.

Reporting to the Sr.

Director, Finance; the role will require strong quantitative, technical, and analytical skills to balance these two competing demands.

Using statistical or machine learning techniques, the Fraud Data Scientist will tune home-grown and third-party fraud prevention technologies and design algorithms and heuristics to identify high-risk transactions, automating real time transaction decisions.

The role will work with Stamps.

com s engineering team to architect and implement new fraud-prevention technologies, and will train customer-facing fraud representatives on new practices, procedures, and technologies, taking back insights on newly developing fraud trends suggesting future analysis.

The Finance Operations Group oversees billing, payment processing, and the flow of funds through the technical systems of Stamps.

com and its subsidiaries.

In addition to monitoring ongoing operations, we work closely with the Product and R&D teams to manage profitability and risk in new features and offerings.

This role directly improves customer experience with our security systems, helping to retain customers, and at the same time protects Stamps.

com and its affiliates from monetary losses from fraudulent activity.

Primary Objectives: Reduce fraud alerts and interventions.

Create operational efficiencies.

Drive automation.

Improve customer satisfaction.

Essential Duties: Analyze large data sets to identify behavior trends among good users and bad actors, using pattern recognition techniques that include statistics, data mining, and machine learning.

Design, develop, and maintain predictive models used for risk management.

Quantitatively optimize alerts and interventions to balance losses against false-positive customer impacts and fraud team workload.

Support Engineering and Operations teams to test, launch, and monitor new fraud detection and prevention capabilities.

Develop algorithms and heuristics that will quickly identify fraud transactions and trends.

Develop business cases for investments in new technologies for more effective fraud decisioning.

Build prototype tools for investigating and managing fraud events/behavior.

Rapidly respond to operational needs by providing ad-hoc analytical support.

Work with other departments (IT, R&D, BI, Customer Service, Finance, Subsidiaries) to develop necessary data.

Build automated reports and dashboards around financial, operational, and customer impact metrics.

Develop procedures for customer-facing fraud representatives.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor s degree required in a quantitative discipline such as Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, Physics.

Advanced degree preferred.

Three to Five (3-5) years experience in fraud modeling, predictive analytics, pattern recognition, or data mining/data analysis required; within a finance, e-commerce, or gaming environment preferred.

Experience analyzing very large (web scale), complex, multi-dimensional data sets using tools such as SQL, SAS, R, or Python.

Experience building machine learning applications.

Skills and Knowledge: Results-driven and highly quantitative.

Ability to deep dive to deliver business insights.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, to work with different departments.

Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with strong ability to multi-task.

Self-motivated, working well both independently and as part of a team.

Computer/Software/Application Proficiency: Proficiency in scripting or coding (Java, Python, Perl, or PHP or similar).
