Job Brief
Manage the regional office operations including office workflow, technical claim handling, management information, quality assurance and performance reviews.

POSITION SUMMARY
To manage the regional office operations including office workflow, technical claim handling, management information, quality assurance and performance reviews. Direct office claim staff in the handling and oversight of the coverage analysis, liability & damages investigation, claim evaluation, negotiation and settlement of claims in multi-jurisdictions, including litigation management. To ensure that coverage legal principals and claim handling regulations are properly applied and adhered to; and, to interact with reinsurers as needed. To manage the regional office operations including office workflow, technical claim handling, management information, quality assurance and performance reviews. To ensure that coverage legal principals and claim handling regulations are properly applied and adhered to; and, to interact with reinsurers as needed.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure new losses are assigned amongst the staff claim units based on lines of business, loss location, severity, experience and workloads.
  • Ensure proper coverage analysis and the duty to defend
  • Review any decision to decline a defense obligation to determine it is supported by the allegations/facts and policy language.
  • Review reservation of rights or coverage declination communications for accuracy, consistency and completeness.
  • Establish a separate claim handler on matters in which a conflict exists between the Company and a policyholder.
  • Review and approve all reserves in excess of a direct report's reserve authority.
  • Ensure any serious injury/damage losses are reported in a timely manner to upper management and reinsurers.
  • Establish a diary on serious injury/damage losses not being co-managed by Home Office Claim.
  • Ensure any and all reinsurance initial notices, updates or queries are timely reviewed, released or responded to by the claim staff.
  • Review all expense bills in excess of the established thresholds for such billings for adherence to Company billing guidelines.
  • Approve all resolution strategies and negotiation plans on claims in excess of a direct report's settlement authority.
  • Conduct periodic quality assurance reviews in conjunction with Home Office Claim in accordance with the established QA criteria.
  • Review and utilization of Claim Management Scorecard statistical information to identify positive and/or negative claim performance trends and address as necessary.
  • Complete biannual performance reviews for each direct report and ensure all office claim personnel have one formal year end performance review submitted to Human Resources.
  • Ensure all claim handlers are licensed for those jurisdiction they handle claims which require a license or reciprocal license.
  • Identify and implement training specific to the office based on internal and external claim reviews and developing statutory law and case law.
  • Establish and monitor vendor relationships (approved Panel defense counsel and Independent Adjusters) to ensure quality and cost effective programs and are in accordance with Company's formal vendor guidelines.
  • Provide ongoing mentoring and necessary training to direct reports, as requested.
  • Such other duties as may be assigned.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent written communication
  • Excellent oral negotiation skills
  • Proficient computer skills (Word, Excel worksheets/pivot tables)
  • CPCU, SLCA or CCLA designation a plus



EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / CERTIFICATIONS

  • College degree required
  • 15+ years commercial property and casualty experience
  • 10+ years litigation management experience
  • 8+ years of property and casualty supervisory experience
  • Experience with client/server claims processing systems a plus



PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Physical demands are considered to be that of an office environment, climate controlled, with minimal physical exertion. This position requires some travel, prolonged sitting, ability to utilize a computer and interactions with others in meetings or via phone.
