Program Underwriting Specialist - Commercial Lines Insurance Overview

Through effective underwriting decision making, mutually beneficial broker relationship and application of underwriting tools, this position is responsible to for developing new business within defined regions, while maintaining a profitable diverse book of business. This role will also focus on providing effective service to brokers and maintain underwriting excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Underwriting Analysis: Identifying, selecting and assessing risks; developing and negotiating price, coverage, terms and conditions for all new and renewal business
  • Sales & Marketing: Demonstrates high level of responsiveness and focus on supporting brokers objectives; Develops and maintains broker relationships through responsive service, in-person meetings, and demonstrates knowledge of their clients’ business
  • Negotiate & Close Deals: Ability to identify coverage comparison, program highlights and values, and effectively communicate to win the deal
  • Portfolio Management: Effectively managing a book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying areas of opportunity for improved growth, profit and diversification and increase market share with preferred brokers
  • Underwriting Excellence: Documents files that reflects a solid thought process and decision making through comprehensive account reviews, sign-offs and referrals; Achieve and maintain a defined audit score; Achieve rate, retention, and financial goal
  • Professional Development: Actively participates by fully engaging in team meetings, demonstrating appropriate procedures and work principles, problem solving activities to support the work of the team; and continue to develop professional relationship between underwriter & underwriting assistant

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of underwriting experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of commercial insurance
  • Ability to evaluate a risk and identify hazards and controls
  • Utilizing logic and reasoning to make underwriting judgement around exposure and pricing
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-volume, fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to build broker relationships and represent the NSM brand
  • Highly motivated and results-oriented
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Detail-oriented with demonstrated ability to self-direct, prioritize work, and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of computer systems (rating system, Pipeline, AFW, ImageRight, etc.)
