EMPLOYMENT DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Frederick Mutual Insurance Company (FMIC) is a regional mutual insurance company located in Frederick, Maryland presently writing business in Maryland and Pennsylvania.  We are also licensed to write in Virginia, Delaware and the District of Columbia and will be expanding our offerings into these areas.  The company has over $54 million in assets, 34 personnel, 230 independent agencies and is rated A- (Excellent) by A.M. Best. FMIC seeks to strengthen its position in the marketplace and pursue continued profitable growth.

Objective: The Property/Casualty Underwriter will manage a book of new and renewal business while meeting FMIC’s profitability, growth and customer service goals. All business is written through our network of independent agents.

  • The skills and knowledge needed for this position are acquired from a number of sources including experience in Commercial and/or Personal Lines Underwriting, knowledge gained from participation in CPCU, IIA, CIC, or experience gained from prior employment with another insurance carrier.
  • Excellent human relation skills together with product and market knowledge are essential, as well as comprehension of Company underwriting rules and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills are required for this position in order to develop and maintain a sound working relationship with fellow team members, agents, and senior management.
  • Must possess strong decision making skills, analytical skills, and be detail oriented.

Responsibilities Include:

Underwriting:

  • Evaluate and underwrite individual risks to accept, decline, modify, non-renew or cancel per Company guidelines and procedures.

  • Price individual risks per Company guidelines using automated system.

  • Examine loss experience for individual risks.

  • Monitor loss experience and business conditions of assigned accounts.

  • Review inspection reports and forward recommendations to the producing agency for loss control.

  • Analyze coverage limit requests and assess risk quality to determine eligibility per guidelines.

  • Issue and process new and renewal policies using automated system.

  • Process policy endorsements and changes adhering to guidelines using automated system.

  • Manage individual workflow to be certain the Company’s service goals are being met.

  • Maintain correspondence and/or diary suspense file.

  • Act as over authority/referral underwriter responsible for approving underwriting referrals within designated authority.

  • Complete underwriting file reviews.

    Marketing:

  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships with our agency force.

  • Conduct periodic visits to designated agencies to be certain the agents are following the desired business development plan and stimulate sales.

Administrative:

  • Active involvement in special projects as assigned by senior management.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    Four year college degree preferred, with continuing education in specialized insurance courses such as IIA, CIC, or CPCU, as well as other educational experiences that enhance product knowledge and technical business relations.

    Minimum of two to four years of Commercial or Personal Lines Underwriting experience.  Some management, marketing, or regulatory compliance experiences a plus.

    Working knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office products and automated underwriting systems.  Familiarity with ImageRight system a plus.

    COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

    Must have strong interpersonal and relationship development skills with the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with various types of personalities.  Strong presentation skills are required with the ability to communicate with small to very large groups.
