Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Grow the Company’s policy and premiums profitably
  • Develop operating plans and budgets for these departments
  • Develop and implement rates, forms, manuals, guidelines, for all lines of business
  • Acquire and monitor the company’s  insurance policies
  • Maintain a good working relationship with the insurance department
  • Report to the CEO the status and projects of the department.
  • Establish and monitor the underwriting budget
  • Determine staffing of the department
  • Evaluate performance of direct subordinates and approve evaluations complied by the department supervisors
  • Experience in resolving underwriting and service issues
  • Review audits of subordinates  and providing appropriate feedback and developmental plans.
  • Determine training needs for the department
  • Monitors and approves payroll for supervisors
  • Advise senior management of any issues that relate to their department
  • Review loss ration by line of business, agent and territory
  • Review loss ration in determining loss assessment agents and develop and implement agency review program
  • Assist in rating agency relationships
  • Maintain an excellent working relationship will all managers to ensure company integrity
  • Attend agent meetings, AFR’s convention, and other meetings or events as requested by the CEO
  • Assist in Reinsurance Program procurement
  • Maintain insurance designations, agent's license, and complete required educational updates
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree (M. A.) and ten years Underwriting experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Human Resource systems; Internet software; Payroll systems; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
  • Knowledge of all Personal Lines underwriting techniques, rates & policy forms
  • Knowledge of Personal Lines and Auto policy systems
  • Supervisory and product development experience
  • Experience in pricing practices, underwriting practices, including scorecard development
  • Knowledge of catastrophe management techniques related to wind, hail and earthquake

Certificate in General Insurance (Ins. 21, 22, & 23)

Associate in Underwriting (Personal or Commercial)

CPCU

CRM Designation

CIC Designation

CISR Designation

P&C Agent License
